Last night, Greg, Finley + Penelope and I headed down to the Saddledome for our first Flames game of the season. Granted it was a pre-season game, which I normally try to avoid, but it was good practice for the regular season with 2 little kids. This was Penelope’s first Flames game at 5 weeks, which makes her 2 weeks older then Finley was when we took her for the first time. Some people think we are crazy taking them to the games, but Finley has loved it and still does and if they sleep through the noise then they will sleep through anything and so far, so good.
It was interesting watching Finley walk to the dome, through the lobby + concourse and through out the game. Although, this is her 3rd season, everything seemed all new to her – she was much more aware this time then at the beginning of last season or even in April when the season ended. She still isn’t sure about the shooting flames when they score, it actually made her cry when they scored the first goal. But thankfully, she got better through out the game.
Both kids were very well behaved and for the 2nd time in 2 days, I was told that my kids were very well behaved!!
Here are some photos from last night and the last 2 season openers with the girls:

September 11th marked the first Mommy + Me dance class for Finley and myself. With the arrival of Penelope, I thought it would be a great idea for us to do something just the two of us, so we registered for dance class. The first class went off really well and the second one – well, not so much! I am hoping for a much better third week! I think part of Finley’s problem is that she is the youngest in the class and won’t turn 2 until the day before her last class. The class is designed for 2 – 3 year olds. Her listening skills and the ability to follow instructions is limited at best. I am hoping that this will help her in this area!
Finley’s dance teacher is Miss McCall – who just happens to be an Outrider. What is an Outrider you ask? That is what the Calgary Stampeders call their Cheerleaders. She is super great and really good with the kids and that says a lot when you have 20 2 – 3 year olds in one room! Greg keeps telling me to wear a Rider shirt or bunny hug but I have yet to do so. Thankfully, I am not the only Saskatchewanian in the class!
Here are some photos before we left for her first 2 classes – each time wearing a new leotard! She is so cute and just loves her leotard…in fact, she had her tutu over her pyjamas when she got up this morning!
Finley all dressed up for our first Mommy + Me dance class! She absolutely LOVED it! We did the Hokey Pokey, the Happy + You Know It dance, the imaginary shoes dance, animal freeze tag, an obstacle course consisting of twirling and rolling and jumping and we ended the class with Head + Shoulders dance. Finley of course loves to dance in circles but is slowing grasping the instructions of each dance!! Thankfully, Mommy’s don’t have to wear the dance attire…..haha!
The only time she will keep a barrette in her hair is for dance class. And you will see how she is carrying her sippy cup – with her teeth. She is no longer allowed to use these sippy cups as carrying them like this causes the lid to come off and milk to dump everywhere and I am tired of cleaning up milk!
On our way to our second dance class wearing her new ballerina outfit that her Great Aunty Faye bought for her! So cute! The hat I had just bought from Superstore. I also got in grey! She loves the hat!!
Finley looks very happy in this photo but unfortunately this good mood did not transfer over to the dance class a mere 20 minutes later. She had a temper tantrum of epic proportions. We did the hokey pokey and then she screamed, cried and insisted at building held for the entire 25 minutes that were left in the dance class. My arms were beyond tired!!
I can’t believe it has already been a month since little Penelope Grier made her much anticipated entrance into our lives. It has definitely been a month of adjustments for everybody but we are doing well!
It has been a busy first month as Penelope has met several members of each of our families. She has stolen the heart of each person she meets!
Here are some interesting tidbits about Miss Penelope:
**She is keeping her eyes open much more these days. I don’t think she opened her eyes once in her first week of life.
**Her neck is getting stronger and she loves trying to keep her head up while looking around her surroundings!
**She loves to be swaddled just like her big sister Finley did
**She hates my sling. Finley loved my sling and I had hoped that Penelope would too. Unfortunately, she has screamed bloody murder every time I attempt to put her in it. She apparently does not care how easy it would be if she would just co-operate and enjoy it…haha
**Unlike Finley, Penelope LOVES bath time. This is such a treat because Finley was a nightmare to bath for most of her first 18 months and the last 5 have been hit + miss. Penelope even kinda smiles when we put her in her baby tub!!
**She loves to be held and loves sleeping on you.
**She loves her big sister. She is always looking at Finley, grabbing for her hand and giving her kisses (with my help of course)…Finley usually reciprocates and only tries to kill her every other hour…just kidding….kinda….
**She loves bouncing whether it’s in your arms, as your squatting or on a exercise ball – she LOVES it. Finley hated bouncing so I am hoping that our Baby Einstein Jumperoo will actually get some use out of it this time round….
**Up until about 3 days ago, Penelope was a pooping machine. She literally pooped in every diaper she was in. Her first day in the hospital she pooped 6x and had pooped a grand total of 15 times in the 55 hours we were there. The staff were more then impressed with her pooping abilities. Unfortunately, because she pooped all the time, her poor little bum was super raw. Our Doctor recommended a homemade paste of water and baking soda which helped for a day or two but then it came back. She now has a special prescription cream which is applied 2x a day to help it get better. This combined with her regulated poop schedule seems to be working….but only time will tell.
**She hates routine. Finley was all about the routine. Penelope eats when she wants, sleeps when she wants and doesn’t care if it is every 2 hours or every 6 hours. She is much more stubborn as a baby then Finley was that is for sure!
**She enjoys to sleep and has been sleeping anywhere from 4 – 8 hours each night…yes 8 hours – I almost peed my pants when I saw that she had been asleep for that long! Both her and Finley take after their daddy when it comes to sleep! Unfortunately, she doesn’t sleep as soundly as Finley did but I will take what I can get.
**As of Wednesday she weights 9 lbs, 5oz. I have no idea where all this weight is because when you look at her, she is much more petite then Finley ever was. All her features are tiny compared to what Finley’s were at the same age. She is so tiny that are re-usable diapers still don’t fit her properly because her waist and legs are so tiny. Finley was 10 days old when she moved from disposable to cloth.
I haven’t taken her official “1 Month” photo yet like I did each month for Finley’s first year as we are actually off to visit some family for the weekend so I will do that when we get back Sunday night or sometime on Monday. I will post when I do. In the meantime, here are some photos taken of Penelope during this week….
Penelope laughing and smiling
Iggy protecting Penelope…he will like her until she starts moving and tormenting him – just like Finley did! One of the sweetest moments of my week…..Finley loves Penelope so much sometimes!
Are you ready for some football? This also is a super sweet photo! GO RIDERS!
Looking a little upset – probably because the Riders had just been humiliated by the Bombers in the Banjo Bowl
Another one of Penelope smiling….
Below is one of my most favourite photos of the girls to date. Just look at Penelope’s face as she looks at her big sister. How wonderful is that?
Picking the future name for your child has got to be one of the most monumental decisions that you make for your child. One that is made usually prior to the child being born and that will stick with the child for the rest of their lives. Studies have shown that their name can determine their social status, their personality and so on.
The first time I heard the name Finley I somehow knew that I would one day name my future daughter that should I blessed to have children. Finley is traditionally a boys name and traditionally spelled Findlay. It is of Scottish origin and means fair haired courageous one or fair hero. I also appreciated the fact that it was an uncommon name here in Canada generally speaking and even more so being a girl’s name.
My mom’s maiden name is Taggart which is why Finley’s middle name is also very masculine. Regardless of the sex, the middle name was going to be Taggart. I wanted to honour my grandparents who were no longer with us and of course my mom. They all played an instrumental part of my life growing up and I wanted that to be reflected in my first child’s name. Taggart is Irish and is taken from McTaggart. It means “Son of the Priest”.
So on October 29th, 2008 Finley Taggart came into this world. I think it suits her, I can’t imagine her being named anything else but maybe that’s just me. I love how unique it is, but am constantly annoyed when I call to make appointments or say her name, they refer to her as a boy – even if it is in person and she is decked out in pink.
This time round, it was much more difficult. I had what I thought were 3 perfect baby girl names with Finley being on top and then 2 additional ones. However, for many reasons, the two perfect names were no longer perfect.
At times, we thought we had the name. We agreed on a bunch but I kept bailing on them. For one reason or another, I vetoed every single name. About two weeks before she was born, we decided that this name was going to be it. We even went and bought the letters from Michaels. But that name was also eventually vetoed because I kept having negative feelings overtime I thought about it. For some reason, this name remained on Greg’s list. (for the record, the name was Esme).
So back to square one we were.
Greg emailed me his list of top 5 names. I hated all of them. I emailed him my final 8. He hated all of them. I was a little stressed out since basically the c-section was less then a week away and there was still the possibility that I could go into labor at any time. So the Friday before she was born, we were watching TV and Greg was on his laptop looking up names. He suggested a few which I of course vetoed until we came to Penelope. We both liked Penelope instantly and it just kinda grew from that.
Greg liked it because it didn’t have any bad things associated it when he googled Penelope and because it was from one of his favourite cartoons as a child. I loved it because it made me remember the movie Penelope. Penelope showed that you have to accept yourself for who and what you were and loving yourself no matter what.
So although we had different reasons for loving this name, the end result was that we both loved it. And only 11 Penelope’s were born in 2009 – woohoo!
Penelope’s middle name is Grier which is Scottish for Gregory so she is named after her dad. Greg really wanted it as a first name but I didn’t think Grier Florizone sounded all that exciting and I didn’t want the pressure of having to find a 3rd Scottish surname for a first name if we do decide to have another child.
So on August 18th, 2010 Penelope Grier was born. A lot of people were caught off by our choice of baby name. We wanted something unique and uncommon but not completely “out there” and I think we accomplished this. But at the end of the day, all that matters is what we think and we both love it. We just hope Penelope will love it too!
Technically it was my birthday but my “party” consisted of dinner with my mom + sister who were visiting from PA & Saskatoon and Greg, Finley + Penelope and I stayed up until a whopping 10pm….oh how I live the life of a rockstar…..
I actually had a great day despite the fact that I am basically exhausted and grasping for energy with every move I make. It started by going shopping with my mom and sister and the girls. We hit up Costco, IKEA, Michaels, and Zellers. I purchased a new laundry hamper for Finley at Ikea and a set of glasses from Zellers with a gift card I had received from my Aunty Sandy and Uncle Lloyd for my birthday. We headed home so Finley could have a nap and get ready for supper out.
We went to Red Lobster for supper, which is one of my favorites – at least for seafood. I had a delicious crab and shrimp combo and Finley loved the shrimp. It made me happy that she was quite well behaved at dinner. Eating out proves to be a challenge these days! My sister had told the waitress that it was my birthday so of course I was humiliated by having them sing to me in front of everybody. Finley loved it and especially loved the chocolate lava cookie that I received. It’s rare she gets chocolate so of course she took full advantage of it!
I got some really cool gifts for my birthday: a new black Marmot shell from Greg and the girls. I had bought a brown Marmot shell in Seattle last summer and I loved it. My black MEC one was falling apart after 6 years of wear and tear so Greg surprised me with a new one. I also got a cute pink Coach bag from my sister along with a Starbucks gift card. I could seriously use a Soy No Water Chai Latte as I am writing this but lack the energy to go purchase one…hahah. I also got some money and rough rider glasses from my mom and I also received the above mentioned gift card from my Aunt & Uncle.
All in all, it was a great day and although I no longer am able to (nor do I want to) party like it’s my birthday, I truly wouldn’t have it any other way!
Thank you mom, Kristy, Greg, Finley & Penelope for a wonderful 31st birthday!
