Happy 10th Birthday Finley!!!

It's hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Finley chose us to be her parents.  When people say "the days are long but the years are short" they could not be more accurate.

Finley loves math so much and would happily do it all day every day if she could.  Her dream is still to move to Houston and becaome an astronaut for NASA.  She is in the recycling group at school and it is one of her favorite things to do.  She loves dogs especially my sister's dog Abby.  She loves facetiming with her friends, hates reading, loves wearing lipgloss and has experimenting with eyeshadow which has been interesting to watch haha.  She hates brushing her hair and is only a little better at showering.  She still loves all things unicorns and Paris and singing on her karaoke microphone.  She loves Taylor Swift, the Mamma Mia soundtracks and Shallow from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper amongst others.  She loves watching The Greatest Showman and singing along to it .

She loves writing stories, performing concerts for Greg and I, she loves doing science experiments and lately has been obsessed with painting. She has a crazy imagination that continues to grow as she gets older.

We have tried to shield her from the stories of hatred and intolerance in today's world but it is becoming harder and harder to do so.  She hears about them from her friends and they discuss them at school.  She has a lot of questions that we unfortunately don't have the answers to.  She wants to make the world a better and safer place and is so full of compassion that I have no doubt that is she going to leave her mark on this world soon.

This photo was taken at the end of September on school picture day and it is where i noticed how much finley has changed in recent months.  The way she dresses, the way she acts, the way she brushes her hair on the days that she actually does it (this is a huge battle in our house every day).  This photo made me happy and sad for so many different reasons.

Finley has such an adventurous spirit and I hope that this is something that continues as she gets older.  She is always up for a hike, a bike ride, a bike pack trip, a backpacking trip, cross country skiing, hanging out in the water or just going for a scooter around the block.  She loves being outside and the harder the adventure, the happier she seems to be.  She is clearly like her dad in that way hahah. She has hiked and biked and backpacked more than most adults and she is only just turning 10 today!!!  Her strength and determination blow me away most days.

This summer she switched soccer teams and it was literally the best thing to happen to her.  She rediscovered her love of the game and her confidence soared higher than it has ever been before.  I honestly thought she wouldn't play for much longer but now i don't know if she will stop.  It is amazing what happens when you have the right teammates and coaches supporting you.  She is on the same team for indoor and at their first game on Saturday, she scored one goal and had 2 assists as her team won 9-0.  She is also excited that they get to keep score officially again. Although officially they won 5-0 haha.

She loves helping her dad on home construction projects and was very excited to lay concrete in the basement bathroom when we finally got around to adding a shower down there in January.  This is her bathroom and she did a lot of the work in there to make happen.

Probably the biggest change of 2018 was that earlier this month she moved from her bedroom upstairs with the rest of us to the basement on her own. We had planned on doing this in the next year or two but it ended up happening earlier.  When she first went down, we had masking tape outlining her room but 3 weeks later, she has a door and all the drywall up so it feels like a real room.  I was sad when she went downstairs even though I knew it would save my sanity but she is really happy down there and since the wifi is really crappy she is upstairs most of the time anyways haha.

Happy 10th Birthday Finley!!  We can't wait to see what you do next!

Lululemon Ghost Race 2018

The Ghost Race is a partnership between Lululemo + Strava and it started last fall.  Calgary was fortunate enough to be on the 12 cities selected for the second year in a row.  Last year it was held in eau claire with a run around the river and back.  I was rehabbing an achilles injury last fall so I was forced to walk it on the last day with Greg and the girls - you can read about it HERE.  So needless to say I was excited to be healthy enough to run it this year.

This year the race started in Mission and then we ran along the river into the community and then turning around at the sandy beach bridge.  I had biked parts of it, but for the most part, it was all brand new running area for me which is great!!  I dropped the girls off at school and then made the drive over to mission to start the virtual race.  You can register for the ghost race HERE if you are interested in doing it.  The only requirement is that you also have the strava app so you can follow the virtual road course and record it for the world to see it.  Or at least those in Calgary haha.

The black ghost flags are clues and guides to make sure that you are going the right way if you cannot read the strava map.  I am not great at reading maps so it was nice to have the reminders haha.

It was so gorgeous yesterday when I ran even if there were still traces of the gross weather we have had for the last several weeks.  It was nice to see that fall decided to show up after a few weeks of an early winter hahah.

There were a ton of runners who were also out Monday morning running the ghost race which was great to see.  I am not sure how busy this pathway would be if not for this race.  The Calgary running community is pretty fantastic and I feel very blessed to be even such a small part of it.

This was the turn around part but I wasn't paying attention and ended up running over the bridge before I realized it was the turn around sign.  I knew that this was the turnaround part from various stories on instagrams from the YYCRunCrew and other friends who have already done it.

Almost at the finish line and I was so happy that I got the opportunity to run it this year instead of walking in pain like I did last year.  I love that Lululemon encourages you to be active and especially active in the community.   There are 2 Lululemon Run Clubs that operate in the city and they will be doing group runs tonight and on Thursday night while the The Tech Shop in Mission will be doing one on Wednesday night.  There is a big ghost party on Saturday night that sounds great and you can register on eventbrite for that one. I have to miss it though due to previous obligations.  The YYCWheezers will be running it on Saturday morning too if you want another opportunity to run it with some great girls.  You can take a look at the YYCRunCrew + LululemonYYC Instagram posts to get more information on each of the group runs going on.  Otherwise you can run it on your own with Strava until October 20th.

When you finish up, Strava sends you a badge to show that you completed the challenge.  The badge is this year's Ghost Race logo.  I have no idea what it means but I sure do like it.  Then there is a redeem reward button that sends you to the Strava webpage which you fill out which then sends you an email for 25% off at Lululemon!!!  Not that I needed another excuse to go shopping haha.

So after I finished my run and redeemed my reward, I drove over to the 4th street location because rumour had it that they had limited edition ghost race gear and I wanted to check them out.  I hadn't planned on getting both the CRB and Love Crew but with 25% off, how could I say no???  Both are so cute!!!

I also bought the Down For It All Vest since I needed (wanted??) a new vest for winter running and cross country skiing.  I am still a little unsure about this one but I will let you know if I kept it or not later on.

I didn't run the ghost run very fast because I was mostly focused on not getting lost or at least off of the ghost race trail and have the run not count haha.  I do plan on running it again on Wednesday when the girls are at school and maybe even Friday too but we will see how the week goes.  If you want to run it with me, just let me know! It could be fun.

Lastly, Thank you so much to Lululemon for selecting Calgary as one of the cities to run the race and to Lululemon Calgary for setting such a great virtual race for us to run.  It was a great treat to leave my regular running area and checkout another great place to run in Calgary!  Hope we are lucky enough to have this back next year too!!!

What I Streamed In September

I watched a lot of parenthood this month but I had to stop watching it after season 4.  Almost that entire season was with Christina battling cancer and with one of my friends daughter also being diagnosed with cancer, I struggled with those scenes and cried a lot harder than I would have 2 months ago.  Also, I think Joel + Julia are going to break up and that really bothers me for some reason so I stopped watching somewhere in season 5 haha.  It is currently streaming all 6 seasons on Amazon Video.

Twice I streamed this using the Shaw On Demand App and watched off of our PVR too.  In case you don't know, we are obsessed with this movie and soundtrack in our house.  It is the best.  You can stream for free from your television subscriber if you don't have shaw like us.  But seriously go watch it now!
